How to Tell a Real Abyssinian: The Ticked Coat Test Anyone Can Do

Most "Abyssinians" you meet are actually regular brown tabbies

Most "Abyssinians" you meet are actually regular brown tabbies with a nice sheen. The real thing looks completely different once you know what to check. Here is the four-step check I use, and where people usually go wrong.

1. Pull one hair out of the brushing pile. Don't use a photo.

An Abyssinian's coat is ticked, not striped. Each single hair carries four to six alternating bands of light and dark color, darkest at the tip. A brown tabby's hair has a different pattern: the stripes sit across the hairs, not along each one. One shed hair under a phone flashlight settles this in seconds. Body-wide, the Abyssinian shows no stripes, spots, or patches at all. That "no pattern" rule is what most self-identified Abyssinians fail.

2. Check the tail tip.

The ticking on an Abyssinian's tail converges into a solid dark color at the very end. It reads like the tail was dipped in ink. CFA's standard recognizes ruddy, the warm brown coat with black tipping, as the original color, and 27+ color variations exist. The dark tail tip survives across most of them.

3. Read the face shape against the wrong lookalikes.

The head is a medium wedge with a soft break at the nose, large almond eyes in gold to green, and a fine dark eyeliner line. The ears are broad, cupped at the base, and set wide apart. Here is where mix guesses go wrong: people see the athletic build and guess Bengal or Ocicat. Those cats have spotted or marbled coats. The actual lookalikes are the Somali, which is the same cat in a medium-long silky coat with a bushy tail, and the much smaller Singapura, 4 to 8 pounds against the Abyssinian's 6 to 11.

More on Abyssinian mixes and breed ID: I wrote about why so many shelter cats are labeled Abyssinian mix over on Medium, and when to run an AI breed check before adoption on Substack.

4. Weigh what the coat can't tell you.

Coat ticking is strong evidence, not proof. A rescue with Abyssinian ancestry three generations back can show a faint residual tick or none at all. Shelter labels run generous with this breed because "Abyssinian mix" sounds better than "brown tabby". If the stakes matter, for a cattery purchase or a health question tied to breed lines, treat the visual check as the first filter and a DNA test as the second.

furriq.com walks each body region against the breed markers and shows what matched and what got ruled out. The Abyssinian identification guide lists the full marker set, and the photo tool runs the same inference on your cat's picture.
